Is Halfup really free?
Yes. Adding expenses, splitting, settling, export and history are free with no caps. Plus is optional and adds extras such as reports and budgets.
How do I split rent by income?
Add up everyone’s monthly income, divide each person’s income by that total to get a percentage, and apply it to the rent. Halfup does this for you and shares out the odd cents so the shares add up to the exact rent. The calculator on this page shows it.
How do you split rent when the rooms are different sizes?
Split by room size: each person pays their bedroom’s share of the total bedroom area. Some homes use a hybrid, half equally for shared space and half by room size. Halfup supports splitting by room size.
What is the fairest way to split bills between roommates?
Fair means agreed in advance. Equal shares suit costs everyone uses, such as internet and electricity, while rent often follows room size or income. Whichever rule you choose, record each bill and each payment so everyone sees the same balance.
How do couples split rent and bills?
Many couples split in proportion to income, so both keep the same share of their pay. Others split equally or by category. Halfup can split by income or equally, and shows who owes whom.
Does Halfup move money?
No. Halfup keeps score. You pay each other the way you normally do, then record the payment so everyone sees the same balance.
Does everyone in the home need the app?
No. You can add people as guests and share a link so they can see balances in a browser. They can join the app whenever they like.
How are cents handled?
Amounts are stored as whole cents. When a bill does not divide evenly, the left-over cents go to the largest remainders and then in member order, so the shares always add up to the exact total.
Is Halfup only for roommates?
Halfup is made for roommates and couples who share a home. Anyone can be added, including guests who only look at the balances in a browser.

Can we use different currencies?
Each home picks one currency for its balances. Amounts are stored exactly, never rounded off.
